Why ‘monochrome and blue’ ?

I’ve suffered chronic depression for over forty years. This has meant being clinically depressed for at least three months out of every year. My lifestyle and career plans have had to be modified.

I’ve tried pretty much every type of medical treatment including various types of anti-depressant and mood stabiliser, ECT, and various types of psychotherapy (counselling). Nothing has worked completely, although some things have helped.

However through the decades of talking with people, studying psychology and counselling, and trying things out I’ve found some ordinary stuff that also helps. And I’ve learned to recognise various aspects of my changing mental and physical states so that I can more easily accept them and make allowances for limitations they place on me.

I’m an author who now has the time and energy to work properly at writing, so it seemed obvious to start a blog about depression. Maybe other sufferers will pick up some useful ideas, or feel encouraged by something I say, or be able to offer insights of their own. Maybe people who live or work with chronic sufferers will find something enlightening here. Life is good. Let’s help each other get more out and put more in.

I intend adding to this blog at least once a week – nag me if I don’t :)

I’ve also got a web site at www.nigel-leech.com .

Monochrome and blue? Because when I feel really blue it feels like I’m only seeing the world in smoky shades of grey.
